Location:

Tillamook State forest, Oregon

Distance:

8.5-9 miles (3.5 hours)

Trail Type:

100% Singletack! Roots! Rocks! Waterfalls! woo hoo!

Directions:

here’s a great map from the ‘mook forest district. I should’t need to give you any more details. start at the rogers camp trailhead and ride clockwise. TRAIL MAP

Description:

This trail is frequented by Mountain bikes, hikers, and horses. Don’t let any of them get in your way. Expect at least 3 major uphill hikes. Also expect several areas of highly technical terrain followed by flowy duffy singletrack. Deeelightful! Be sure to stop at University falls to eat a mango. It’s in your pocket.

here’s some eye candy:

wils0n river trail(footbridge-'mook forest center)

Location:
Tillamook State Forest, Oregon

Trail Type:
100% Single track. In and out or shuttle.

Distance:
7 miles

Directions:
From Portland-Hwy 26 west to hwy 6 (tillamook).
about 13 miles weat of the summit, park at the FootBridge trailhead. Proceed west a bit to find the footbridge that crosses high over the wilson river. Shut up and ride from here.

Trail Description:
I’ve been dying to try this trail for at least a year. it’s a realtively new trail and is open to mountain bikes, hikers and of course unis. It’s a welcome addition to our winter trail arsenal since its elevation hovers around 500ft. It should be rideable all winter long except during the occasional snow storm (which, incidently, ocurred the week before the Bastards hit the trail)

The trail begins by crossing a beautiful gorge over a brand new footbridge (hence the name footbridge for the trailhead)

followed by a steep drop into the river canyon, then a couple of miles of rolling singletrack which traverses the hillside before coming to wilson falls. Cross the gorgeous 100ft waterfall anyway you can

then beging descending back down to the river. this section is mostly flat, rolling, and fun. We ran into too much snow to complete the whole route, but we’ll likely be back this spring!

The trail never really leaves the busy highway very far behind. This isn’t much of a wilderness experience, but hey, it’s sweet LEGAL single track. stop whining.

there are also several stream crossings along the way. choose your own path

Get the big-ass Giffy Pinchy map so’s you don’t git yerself lost.

Description:

Gorgeous. Mossy rocks and trees. Emerald Pools. Waterfalls. Perfect Uni trail.
Equal parts Duffy Joy..... ....and Sharp Rocks with several challenging creek crossings.

Begin this Ride at the end of Forest road 5701. You’ll ride IN upstream and OUT downstream. None of the climbs are too intense or too long. There are several technical sections interjected into the duffy joy ride. There are also several areas to get your “TRIALS’n ON”....

It’s about 5 miles to Calamity creek where you are guaranteed a blast trying over and over again to clean the 25 feet of, sometimes quite slimy, rocks. Wheee!

If time is short, this makes a convienient turn around (approx 2 Hours for me). Since you climbed, on average, while riding upstream, heading out is almost pure joy with very few climbs. So please, do enjoy. Also, please stop and join me for a rousing chorus of “head shoulders knees and toes!” at Siouxon falls (after the idiots get out from in front of the camera).

Firelane 5

Ride Style

Firelane Plus. Out& Back

Location

TH

Lower Saltzman gate

Description

From Saltzman, climb uphill until your junk goes numb. Really, it’s only about 1.5 miles and 500ft vert.
Keep a looky for a large cut log at an uphill left turn. Then Peel your glazzies and viddy a stand of large second growth.
See that tiny trail on the left? Don’t take it. It’s private property. Once at the top, head steep left down through a deep gravel sweeper and sally forth. This is FL5. Always choose left. When FirelaneW presents itself, keep going straight and enjoy some of the best Uni single track in FP. Give many thanks to the good boys and girls at P.U.M.P. who helped re-create this trail (with the help, mind you, of a man wearing a skirt, carrying a baby and proffering fresh melon). At the bottom of FL5, bear right on Leif Erickson. You’ll see a meadow on your left. This leads to Maple trail. Don’t take this. It is illegal. When you get back to Saltzman, head downhill to the gate.

Scappoose

Scappoose (the Poose)

Type

Single track. Twisty-hilly-rolling-frightening-joyful-serene-rooty-stunty. It’s all here!

Directions

Take 30 N out of PDX. About 5 miles North of the Sauvie Island bridge, you’ll see the truck scales on the right. Keep them peeled for ROCKY POINT ROAD in about another mile. Turn Left toward Rocky Point. Very quick Left again onto rocky point road. Travel uphill about 1 mile. Look for the first gate on your right. Contrary to popular myth, it is not ‘blue’, it is more of a tourqouise or robin’s egg. Park near the gate. This is the entrance to the trail system.

Comments

Kicks Ass!
The trail system consists of one main fire road and one slightly ‘lesser’ (sorry MJ) fire road from which, a bountiful selection of singletrack spur trail spawn. Each signed trail is essentially a complex loop that eventually leads you back to a fire road. Keep your wits about you and always know which way is south and you will not get lost. There is no mapping as of this date, but you long suffering narrator plans to get out there someday with a GPS. someday. I’ll tell you when that is.

I suggest saving the “lollypop” system for on you way out. You might try entering via “dead dog”, work your way over to “north shore” dropping down into “the maze” for a while. If you are feeling energetic, head deeper into the fireroad and look for “not a mile”. “Crosstie” is a winner. Also check out “triple bypass” and “purple haze”

I am told that this system has been around for a decade or more thanks to several dedicated locals and their trusty shovels. But the Poose has recently enjoyed a renaissance tanks primarily to the good folks at PUMP who have engaged in a flurry of trailbuilding and signage posting over the last two years. God bless their little hearts.
