Scappoose (the Poose)
Type
Single track. Twisty-hilly-rolling-frightening-joyful-serene-rooty-stunty. It’s all here!
Directions
Take 30 N out of PDX. About 5 miles North of the Sauvie Island bridge, you’ll see the truck scales on the right. Keep them peeled for ROCKY POINT ROAD in about another mile. Turn Left toward Rocky Point. Very quick Left again onto rocky point road. Travel uphill about 1 mile. Look for the first gate on your right. Contrary to popular myth, it is not ‘blue’, it is more of a tourqouise or robin’s egg. Park near the gate. This is the entrance to the trail system.

Kicks Ass! The trail system consists of one main fire road and one slightly ‘lesser’ (sorry MJ) fire road from which, a bountiful selection of singletrack spur trail spawn. Each signed trail is essentially a complex loop that eventually leads you back to a fire road. Keep your wits about you and always know which way is south and you will not get lost. There is no mapping as of this date, but you long suffering narrator plans to get out there someday with a GPS. someday. I’ll tell you when that is.
I suggest saving the “lollypop” system for on you way out. You might try entering via “dead dog”, work your way over to “north shore” dropping down into “the maze” for a while. If you are feeling energetic, head deeper into the fireroad and look for “not a mile”. “Crosstie” is a winner. Also check out “triple bypass” and “purple haze”
I am told that this system has been around for a decade or more thanks to several dedicated locals and their trusty shovels. But the Poose has recently enjoyed a renaissance tanks primarily to the good folks at PUMP who have engaged in a flurry of trailbuilding and signage posting over the last two years. God bless their little hearts.
